German vehicles deployed at the early stage of WW2 were generally painted with dark grey. Those deployed in Africa were later given another paint layer of desert yellow. The dry and scorching weather in North Africa made it very likely for paint layers to get faded and chipped; it’s common to see yellow vehicles with grey chippings.
